It's not enough just to change the oil and filter. Each time you have your car serviced there is some important preventive maintenance that should be performed. Our 3750 oil change service includes all of the following:
We all see and hear the advertisements that insist that we change our oil every 3,000 miles, but is that really necessary? Well, maybe it is, and maybe it isn't!
It is important that you change your oil regularly. But, every 3,000 miles? That depends on your vehicle and your driving habits. And, some manufacturers recommend oil changes every 5,000 or 7,500 miles.
Also, with some new synthetic oils it's possible to go up to 20,000 miles between oil changes. This does NOT mean you should stop changing your oil regularly. But, also don't be fooled by "quickie-lube" shops and oil company marketing that prompts you to change your oil every 3,000 miles. It might not be necessary!
So, how often should you change your oil? Just ask British American and we'll review your driving habits and recommend an oil change schedule that matches your driving style.
If you do a lot of city driving, then you should change your oil more often, if you drive mostly highway, then you might be able to extend your oil change periods.
So, changing your oil regularly is important, but remember, an oil change is not a service!
I recently had a new customer arrive
at our shop. As always I asked, "when
did you last have your car serviced?
" Her (defensive) answer was "I have had all my oil changes.... the oil change center I go to says everything is ok".... "I look after my car."
This is not an unusual reply from someone who believes that going regularly to an oil change and lube center is correctly servicing their car.
From what she said, if her car was "all OK", why was she here telling me about experiencing some dramatic driving symptoms? Her vehicle's anti lock brakes were coming on while driving down the road when she was NOT braking; the car did not track straight and was making loud noises.
We put her car was on the lift and the technician immediately reported to me that the front wheel was almost falling off because the wheel bearing was so worn out. This is a very dangerous situation! It takes a long time to get to this condition.
When I spoke to the customer about this she wanted to know why her quickie-lube shop didn't warn her of this situation. I explained that a lot of lube centers do not check out the safety features of the vehicle like brakes, steering, suspension, tires etc. Most do not put the vehicle on a lift where the wheels hang free, this is important to ascertain this kind of problem. And, of course, most do not have certified technicians who would know how to look for and recognize this type of problem.
This customer was lucky that she stopped in before the wheel actually fell off. Who knows what would have happened. Maybe just the inconvenience of being stranded at the roadside, but it could have resulted in a nasty accident with damage to the vehicle and occupants!
So, don't rely on a quickie lube shop for maintenance advice. Your best bet is to always come back to British American, even for your oil changes, we will check your car thoroughly and test drive it, even for a small oil change!
