"An Oil Change" versus "Complete Automotive Oil and Filter Services"

The key word here is "services" -- not change your automobile oil and filter and off you go. An automobile engine is a very expensive unit; it should have it’s oil and filter changed on a regular schedule to make sure the engine lasts a long time. But a vehicle is made up of many other expensive systems that also need to be checked. Importantly, you need to be sure that your auto mechanic checks the key safety items each time your vehicle is serviced. Manufacturers recommend servicing your vehicle at set intervals, and these intervals will vary depending on the type of driving you do. The same applies to determining when to change the oil and filter.
A quality oil and filter service should include the following:
1) A Road Test - This is very important because a technician will:
- Listen for noise
- Test the brakes
- Check the handling
- Check the performance
- Check the general operation of the vehicle
The road test also warms up the engine for the oil and filter change.
2) Check lights, wipers and washers
3) Check all the fluid levels and report on the condition of fluids.
4) While the vehicle is on the lift, the brakes, exhaust, steering and suspension should be checked, not only for wear but for possible damage from something hitting the underside of the vehicle.
5) Lubricate grease fittings and steering stops.
6) Check the tires for proper inflation pressure, wear, damage (something in tread) and for being out of round (caused by hitting a pot hole or curb).
7) Check belts, hoses and battery connections.
8) Check for oil leaks.
9) Oh yes -- and change the oil and filter!!
10) Lastly, reset the service reminder system and a conduct a final road test.
This service is very important for new cars as well older ones because if there are any concerns, they should can be caught and addressed before the warranty runs out.
